Mil-PRF-81705F Class 1

What is Mil-PRF-81705F?

MIL-PRF-81705 sets the standards for materials that protect static-sensitive components in military packaging from water vapor, static electricity, and electromagnetic interference.

This specification ensures that packaging for microcircuits and assemblies meets the Department of Defense requirements for water-vapor transmission, EMI attenuation, shielding, and mechanical strength.

Mil-PRF-81705 Type I, Class 1

Defense equipment is often exposed to extreme environmental conditions, including high humidity, salt exposure, rough handling, and limited storage control. Reliable moisture, static, and corrosion protection are essential for maintaining equipment integrity under these stresses.

No commercial equivalents meet the U.S. military’s strict standards for physical, mechanical, electrical, and corrosion resistance. As a result, materials must undergo extensive testing and approval through the Qualified Products Database (QPD). This process ensures that every material used in defense packaging meets official military specifications.

MIL-PRF-81705 Specification

MIL-PRF-81705 is the U.S. military performance specification for flexible barrier materials used in protective packaging applications. It defines the requirements for shielding materials that prevent moisture, static, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) damage to sensitive components.

Type I – Watervaporproof, Electrostatic Protective & EMI Shielding

Type I materials combine moisture vapor protection, electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding in a single multilayer construction — ideal for electronics and defense components.

Class 1 – Flexible Sealing Compatibility

Class 1 materials are engineered for compatibility with both hand-operated and automated sealing equipment. This flexibility ensures consistent seals in diverse production environments, from manual packaging to high-speed automated lines.

Packaging Formats

MIL-PRF-81705F Type I, Class 1 material is versatile. It can be made into many types of packaging to fit your project’s needs. From small custom bags to large barrier solutions, 3D Barrier Bags, Inc. can provide what you need.

Performance Specifications for Mil-PRF-81705F

To be listed in the Qualified Products Database (QPD), barrier materials must pass rigorous laboratory tests that verify their quality and performance. All testing is conducted on the final, production-ready material to ensure that nothing affects quality or compliance.

Mil-PRF-81705 Identification Requirements

After the above testing is approved for use, the material must still meet additional identification requirements. All lettering should be clear and legible. It must be written in water-resistant ink and should be no less than 1/8th inch high (Group A) or no less than 1/2 inch high (Group B) and include the following information:

Group A

  • Specification Number
  • Specification Type
  • Specification Class
  • Manufacturer’s Designation
  • Month and Year of Manufacture
  • Lot number
  • Heat Sealing Conditions

Group B

  • EMI/Static Shield

Applications in Electronics Packaging

Manufacturers of data servers, electronic cabinets, circuit boards, and communication modules must protect their assemblies during transit and long-term storage. These systems are especially vulnerable to ESD, moisture ingress, and EMI. Any of these factors can degrade performance before deployment.

With 3D Barrier Bags, Inc.’s MIL-PRF-81705F qualified materials, assemblies can be sealed in static-shielding, moisture-barrier packaging to ensure military compliance and operational readiness.
