Commonly referred to as Mylar® or aluminum barrier foil, high barrier foil is composed of 3 to 4 layers of different materials (typically Polyester, Aluminum & Polyethylene). These materials are bonded together with adhesive or extruded polyethylene. Due to the layer of aluminum, these laminates have the lowest transmission rate of water vapor and oxygen of any known flexible material. Barrier foil protects the integrity of any application where deterioration of the product may take place due to:
  • Moisture
  • Oxygen Ingress
  • U.V. Light
  • Temperature Extremes
  • Odors
  • Chemicals
  • Mold & Fungi Growth
  • Grease & Oils
This material can be used to make vapor proof bags, rolls and sheets.

Lay the loose base sheet on the pallet and place your item on top of the base. Once the item is secure, place the bag over the item and heat seal the bag to the base. Leaving a small gap at the end of the seal, pull all of the air out of the bag with a shop vac. For an easy step-by-step process, click here. 

A box bag with a loose base is most commonly used with large, heavy items such as machineryOEMsexport packing or electronic cabinets.

Important Safety Information: Before you use your industrial heat sealer, make sure the sealing bars are clear of any debris & the temperature gauge has been adjusted to your requirements. Once the device has been plugged in, you should see a red light indicating that it is connected to a power source. Once reaching the desired temperature for the heat sealer, a green light will appear on the device. The ideal temperature to seal Barrier foils is 375 F of constant heat.

To use the heat sealer, place the sealable material between the sealing bars and clamp them together. Wait 2-4 seconds before releasing the sealing bars and repeat the process with any other areas of the material that you wish to seal. Formula:

For temperate climates: W = 11ARM + DF
For tropical climates: W = 40ARM + DF

W = Weight in grams of basic desiccant
A = Area in square meters of the moisture vapor barrier
R = Water vapor transmission rate of the barrier in grams per square meter in 24 hours, measuring at 90% of RH and 38 ° C (100 ° F)
M = Maximum time in months of transit and storage
D = Weight in grams of blocking packaging, impact damping and any other hygroscopic packaging materials that are inside the barrier (including cardboard, timber, foam, etc.)
F = Factor, depending on the type of stowage

Mil-DTL-117 is the specification the government uses when it determines that an item it needs must be shipped to them in a bag form. Requirements include:

  • Water vapor proof
  • Greaseproof
  • Flexible
  • Heat-sealable
  • Stamped with an arrow pointing to the open end
  • Specification number & revision letter type
  • Class & style
  • Bag’s manufacturer & designation
  • Month & year of the bag’s fabrication

Mil-PRF-131L (Formerly Mil-PRF-131K) Class 1 is a water-vapor proof, foil laminate barrier material, used to make barrier bags and shrouds for corrosion protection. Mil-PRF-131 Class 1 materials must include the following printed in a lusterless red :

  • Material Code
  • Manufacturer
  • Batch Number
  • Lot Number
  • Nomenclature
  • Moisture Transmission Rate
  • Sealing Guidelines

One way degassing valves allow pressure to be released from packaging while preventing air from getting in.
In theory yes. There are companies in the US that actively recycle multi-layer aluminum laminates. They are often at capacity though and charge a premium for the service. 3D Barrier Bags has a Waste Minimization statement that is available upon request. Where possible waste from our factory is sent to salvage the aluminum content rather than landfill. Recycling of multi-layer laminates is becoming more and more common as consumers move from rigid to flexible packaging.

Our liners are produced with a “Chevron” bottom that opens up to the flat bottom of the liner. This video shows how to “pop” the base to form the flat bottom.

Anti-static materials eliminate the potential operator shocks when discharging from a woven polypropylene sack. Anti-static packaging can also be used when you are shipping electrical components and any potentially explosive materials.
